What is your favourite animal and why?
In English we will start off exploring traditional rhymes. We will then be writing recounts using our visit to the farm as our focus. In Maths we will begin our work on addition within 20 before moving on to place value up to 50. In DT we will be creating our own free-standing structures. We will be designing and creating a rocket and will finish the project by evaluating our work. In RE we will be exploring the question ‘What makes some places sacred?’. In Geography we will explore the season of Spring by looking at the weather and comparing Spring to other seasons. In Science we will continue to investigate different types of animals. We will continue to explore a range of animals, compare their similarities and differences and classify them.

In DT we made our own moving pictures using mechanisms such as sliders or levers. In PSHE we focused on celebrating differences.

Big Question...
What makes me amazing?
In our first term in Year 1 we learnt all about ourselves. In English we looked at traditional tales with a focus on Jack and the Beanstalk. In Maths we practiced sorting and counting objects before moving onto finding one more and one less of a given number. We investigated the human body in Science and how they work. We also investigated our senses and which part of the body they belong to. In Geography we explored the area we live in and our local area. In Art we explored the colour wheel as well as the different techniques we can use when using a paint brush. We worked as a team to create some Art work in the style of Jackson Pollock.

Important things to remember...
Phonics
Phonics plays a huge part of our learning in Year 1. All children will take part in the Phonics Screening Check in June. The purpose of the phonics screening check is to confirm that all children have learned phonic decoding to an age appropriate standard. With some exceptions, all pupils who have reached the age of 6 by the end of the school year must take the check during that academic year. Please find more information here -https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/676e908e517edf5c74c83728/Phonics_screening_check_information_for_parents.pdf
Our chosen scheme for phonics is Little Wandle Letters and Sounds. Please visit the Little Wandle website for more support on how you can help your children at home.
