Children's Mental Health at Broadfield

Our aims

At Broadfield Primary school, we aim to promote positive mental health for every member of our staff and every child in our school. We pursue this aim using both universal, whole school approaches and specialised, targeted approaches aimed at all and vulnerable pupils. We know we are pioneers at supporting children with social emotional and mental health needs, but there is always more we can do.

This document describes Broadfield’s approach to promoting positive mental health and wellbeing. This policy is intended as guidance for all staff and governors. This policy should be read in conjunction with our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Policy as SEMH is one of the four broad categories of need according to the SEND Code of Practice (2020), the Behaviour Policy and also the Staff Well-being Policy. This policy also links to our Safeguarding policy, RSHE policy and the Equality policy. To view these policies please see our "Policies and Statutory information" page.

In addition the policy relates to the Statutory guidance for Physical health and mental wellbeing (Primary and secondary)

Please also be aware that promoting Children's Mental Health also features within the Broadfield Curriculum, in particular through PHSE and RHE.

The Policy Aims to:

  • Highlight the importance of positive mental health at Broadfield School.
  • Increase understanding and awareness of common mental health issues in children.
  • Alert staff to early warning signs of mental ill health in children.
  • Outline Broadfield’s Pathway to supporting Social Emotional and Mental Health
  • Provide support to pupils suffering mental ill health their peers and parents/carers.

Our Mental Health Leads are Mrs. Nisa Zaib and Mrs. Hannah Shepherd and they can be contacted via school on 01706 647 580.
